Occupation*Doris had many "careers" and thoroughly enjoyed nearly all of them. She worked as a waitress throughout high school in a local coffee shop and at the Vanderbilt Inn, where the manager, Mrs. Fesser, became her dear friend and mentor. After high school, she worked at a clerical job for a short time and then was hired by Malvina Thompson to be secretary to Eleanor Roosevelt (mentioned in Eleanor Roosevelt's My Day column April 9, 1954). After 4+ years in this exciting, demanding, intensely satisfying job, she left to work as an editor with the Interamerican Business Journal in New York City. Over the next two or three years, she held jobs as varied as ILGWU office manager, travel agent and more -- always expanding her skills and knowledge. She worked as an editor with the IBM Journal of Research and Development until it moved to Westchester County, then became secretary to the president of the State University College at New Paltz. Finally, she returned to IBM, where she had several more careers! She first worked as an editor helping to develop the first highly sophisticated word processing system while producing system manuals for the launch of IBM's System/360. She then became editor and producer of large-system proposals. When her husband took a job as a nursing administrator in Staten Island, she became a systems engineer in IBM's Finance office on Wall Street and worked with the New York Stock Exchange as well as with smaller brokerage firms in developing applications to automate their manual procedures. Later, she moved with her family to Atlanta where she became a producer of sales promotional materials for IBM's venture into small computers. She remained in Atlanta until her retirement, holding various management positions.5
Note*After retirement, Doris remains busy, spending several years as a volunteer with the AARP Tax-Aide program and enjoying many fulfilling years as family genealogist, always learning about the history and events that shaped all our lives. As an early advocate of DNA testing for genealogy, she started and leads several projects, whose goal is to enhance our knowledge of family origins.5
DNA test*Doris has done extensive testing with Family Tree DNA, Ancestry.com, 23andMe, MyHeritage and LivingDNA. Her Gedmatch IDs are T534448, A206179, and M277130. Confirmed matches based on chromosomal mapping and triangulation now support virtually all the lineages in Doris's pedigree. Also, see the person pages for many of the individual DNA matches but notice there are many more not recorded here. They can be found at all the various company testing sites. Many matches are not identified, leaving lots more work for future researchers.8

Life Events

Birth*18 July 1920; East St. Louis, Illinois1
NoteBill worked as an attendant at Hudson River State Hospital for many years before and after WW II. In 1958, he resumed his education and became a health care professional, a long-time goal.

At the age of 12, he ran away from the Masonic Orphanage in Utica, NY without completing the 8th grade in school. He worked wherever he could -- as a shandy gaff on the railroad, a cook in small-town taverns, a farm laborer, a New York City parking lot attendant (where he learned to drive!), even as a singer in bars and taverns. At the time war broke out, Bill was looking forward to a bright future as a professional boxer; the war ended that dream.

His true calling was in the medical field, however, and his years as an attendant in a mental institution and later as a nurse for the profoundly retarded were rewarding, despite the frustrations he endured everyday. As a high level manager in these fields, he encountered, and dealt with, numerous cases of neglect and abuse. He would not tolerate inadequate care and inattention to patients and was rewarded by the devotion of good employees and patients alike. At the same time, he had enemies among former employees he had discharged for incompetence or cruelty. Two incidents illustrate the extent of this enmity.

While he worked in his office one day, an undertaker appeared to pick up a body; it was his! This unnerving experience was followed by an incident in which Bill was physically attacked by a former worker. He successfully fought him off, but the fight left him weakened and sore. His lack of control over patient care due to upper management's lack of support caused him to suffer increasing depression which eventually led to a nervous breakdown. This in turn led to my accepting a job transfer to another state, largely in an effort to remove him from an untenable situation.

This move resulted in a new life for all of us. Bill worked as a nurse and a director of nursing, but he was hampered by the inevitable influence of age on his very significant wartime injuries from which he never fully recovered. He had accomplished far more than anyone could have expected when he left the hospital in 1945 after 14 months in a full body cast. He was an extraordinary human being who had suffered enormously, both physically and psychologically, yet was always ready to set aside his own misery to help others.
Milit-Beg*1941; immediately after Pearl Harbor (World War II). He enlisted and became a paratrooper with the 101st Airborne. He was severely wounded at Normandy. Everyone in his unit died during the drop and he single-handedly completed all unit objectives before falling three days after the D-Day invasion. He spent fourteen months in military hospitals before his discharge in August 1945. His military ID was 12-039-065. All records were lost in a fire in the National Personnel Records Cemter in St. Louis, MO on July 12, 1973. His Discharge Papers are in DJW file.2,3,4
Note*1943; Address: P.F.C. William A. Wheeler; Army Serial Number 12039065; HQ 1st Battalion, 502nd Parachute Regiment, APO No. 472; c/o Postmaster, Nashville, Tenn5
Education*at Hudson River State Hospital School of Nursing; Richmond College, SUNY, Staten Island, NY; and Jersey City State College from which he received his R.N., B.S. and M.S. degrees, respectively.
Marriage*23 March 1958; Principal=Doris J. Muller
Death*22 July 1991; Conyers, Rockdale, Georgia6
Burial*25 July 1991; Arlington Cemetery, Atlanta (Sandy Springs), Fulton, Georgia7
NoteHis Mayflower ancestors include George Soule, William Bradford and Stephen Hopkins.( Adria's membership in the Mayflower Society is based on William Bradford.) His notable relatives include Philip Shearman, first secretary of Rhode Island, Roger Sherman, signer of the Declaration of Independence, General William Tecumseh Sherman of Civil War fame, and President Franklin D. Roosevelt. His Revolutionary War ancestors include Jonathan and Squire Haskell and Jonathan Shepard.

Theodore John Muller Bowyer1,2

#4, born 17 June 1905, died 29 September 1989
Theodore J. Muller (Bowyer) ca 1930
DNA testing revealed the fact that TJM was not born a Muller. His mother had been married for more than ten years when she gave birth to him. The assumption is that his mother's husband was sterile (perhaps from mumps since only one of his brothers had children of his own). It seems the doctor "fixed" the problem, perhaps using artificial insemination long before it became popular as a solution for infertile males. Their relatedness is thoroughly confirmed by DNA matches to FFB's descendants and to both his parental lines. TJM's maternal lines are also DNA proven.3

Biography*1915; Click here for a bio published in 1915 in Pennsylvania and found on MyHeritage.com. While brief, it laid the foundation for compiling the genealogy of this family, now fully confirmed by numerous DNA matches to Franklin's descendants and his paternal and maternal lines.2,3
Birth*17 June 1868; Chestertown, Warren, New York
Census*1890; New York, New York, New York; New York City Police Census4
Education*about 1894; Columbia University, New York, New York, New York
Marriage*14 June 1898; Principal=Adelaide C. Mulrey
Death*December 1953; Patterson, Passaic, New Jersey; Place of residence: Franklin Lakes, Bergen County, NJ5
(Witness) Historyabout 1960

DNA Match*Matches at 23andMe, MyHeritage, and FamilyTreeDNA, as well as Gedmatch, yield triangulated confirmation of these relationships via descendants oof brother William and son William: Kay 176, Britt 136, Patricia 313 cMs, etc. Numerous other DNA matches to Franklin's parents' lines provide further proof.
Story*Finding this grandfather so late in life has left much to speculation, so this biography is sketchy at best.

This youngest child had certain advantages the others probably did not. He was educated in a military school in North Gramby, NY, then sent to medical school at Columbia University in New York City. Marrying a few years after graduation, he settled in Jersey City, where he would live and practice medicine for at least 42 years.

Franklin and Adelaide's first son apparently left home as a teenager and joined the army. He is found years later in Ohio, having married late and with no known children. No more is known of him. Their second son became a lawyer and lived with his wife nd two children in his father's home at least until 1940, eventually moving to Franklin Lakes, NJ. A descendant (and DNA match) remembers living with them in Jersey City.

Dr. Franklin probably moved late in 1940 to the large medical complex that includes a nursing home in Patterson where he would die. (I believe this is known today as St. Joseph's Regional Health Center.) Perhaps he continued practicing medicine while he resided there, or he may have been content to rest after a full and productive career.

Whatever the circumstances of our father's birth, whether artificial insemination or an affair, we can only be grateful that this man gave us life. May he rest in peace. Doris
Anecdote*Having found a record of of an Abraham and a John Bowyer as Members Of The Royal College Of Surgeons In England, 1845, I wonder if this Franklin was following a family tradition of medical practice. In fact, a search of thisi collection reveals several records of Bowyer men in medical science, starting as early as 1812. In 1720, I find a G. Bowyer as the lead printer (author?) of the master Pharmacopia adopted by the King and ordered for use by all apothecaries in England and Wales.7,8
Note*Early bearers of surname Bowyer:

Ailwardus le Bogiere, 1183 in Pipe Rolls (London); William le Boghier, le Bowiere, 1275 in Hundred Rolls (London); William Boyer, 1279 in Hundred Rolls (Hunts); Henry le Bowyere, 1296 in Feet of Fines (Suffolk); John Bowyer, 1543 in IGI (Leigh, Staffs); Agnes Bowyer, 1545 in IGI (Kingsclere, Hants); John Bowyer, 1546 in IGI (Kidderminster, Worcs); Joane Bowyer, 1559 in IGI (Petworth, Sussex); Margarta Bowyer, 1559 in IGI (Westbury, Wilts); Stephen Bowyer, 1695, Stephen Bouyer, 1711 in IGI (Remenham, Berks).9
