Buck, Dutchess County Tax Lists 1718-1787). (In the same source document, there is an entry on page 113 showing a John Wells Brown as a taxpayer on the Worden Place from June 1762 to June 1765 in the Nine Partners/Crum Elbow Precinct.) Benjamin is in Dutchess County in 1780 with wife Sarah Frost and two children ages 3 and 1 (see Bahn Census Data). He is shown on the federal census in Clinton, Dutchess Co. with 2 males under 16 in 1790; in 1800 with 3 males under 10 and 1 between 10-16, also with 1 girl under 20 and 1 between 10-16. In 1810, there is a Benjamin in Greenfield, Saratoga Co. showing 11101-11. A Benjamin owned land in Saratoga County, NY as noted in N.Y. Deeds, Q:11, per NEHGR, Vol. 138, p. 212, 1984. In 1820 there are 3 Benjamins in New York State, one in Middlefield, Otsego Co., one in Halfmoon, Saratoga, Co. and one in Greenfield, Saratoga Co. (with Moses?). In 1820 there is also a Benjamin Woodin in Seneca, Ontario Co. In 1830, there is a Benjamin P. Woodin in Pawling, Dutchess Co., a Benjamin Worden in Johnstown, Montgomery Co. (probably our Benjamin because his Rev. War pension application was filed there in 1834) and another in Middlefield, Otsego Co.
Benjamin appears as an active member of the Clinton community from 1781 through 1796. He is shown as highway overseer, constable and tax collector in many of these years, according to "Records of Crum Elbow Precinct, Dutches County, NY 1738-1761 Together with Records of Charlotte Precinct 1762-1785, Clinton Precinct 1786-1788 and Town of Clinton 1789-1799," ed. by Franklin D. Roosevelt, part of the Dutchess County Historical Society, Vol. VII, 1940.
According to "Eighteenth Century Documents of the Nine Partners Patent, Dutchess County N.Y.," comp. by Clifford Buck and William McDermott, ed. by William McDermott: Benjamin Worden witnessed a deed transaction on Apr 1 1786 (10:125) for 300 pounds from David and George Arnold to Jonathan Arnold, bounds Paul Paretse, Teddier Allen, David Johnson, Robert Irwin, Matthew Howard, Samuel Upton. P. 231 #536.
The same source shows Benjamin on a tax list dated June 12, 1801 having real estate valued at $300. p. 637.
The same source shows several land transactions involving Isaac and other Frosts, at least one of which shows Frost land bordering Benjamin Worden.
Benjamin is involved in several legal cases as documented in "Ancient Documents of Dutchess County, NY." These incidents appear in File Nos. 11023, 11364 and 11539.10
Land Transaction*1 April 1786; Dutchess, New York; witnessed a deed (Book 10:125) between David Arnold and George Arnold; bounds Paul Paretse, Teddier Allen, David Johnson, Robet Irwin, Matthew Howard, Samuel Upton; 90 acres; second witness was Jonathan Arnold11

One is in Stillwater, Saratoga County (this one I have not been able to view; the copy at Ancestry.com is damaged. However, the Benjamin in Stillwater in 1840 is between 60 and 70 years old. Our Benjamin woud be 84 in 1840). Another is in Middlefield, Otsego County, NY. The third is probably our Benjamin: Johnstown, Montgomery County, NY. He is found there in 1841.25

Mother*Mary Cock born August 1722, died after 1777

Family

Benjamin Worden born 25 August 1756, died before 11 March 1841
Children

Life Events

Birth*16 June 1755; Long Island, New York; , per Frost Genealogy, "[Isaac] left Long Island in 1763." Sarah may have been born in Mill River Neck.1,2,3
Marriage*about 1775; Principal=Benjamin Worden4,5,3
Death*before March 18186,7
Note*See Frost Genealogy; also see Cox Genealogy for Sarah's mother. In the Bible Records of Jacob Frost 1752-1837, Sarah is shown as the child of Joseph and Martha Frost (and Jacob's sister), born 16 June 1755 (Adriance Memorial Library, Poughkeepsie, NY). However, in both the Frost and Cox genealogies, she is known as daughter of Isaac and Mary (Cock) Frost. This is further confirmed by her brother James' will, in which he names the children of his deceased sister Sarah Worden. Therefore, the bible record for Jacob Frost 1752-1837 seems to be in error.

Life Events

Name-OthCoon
(Witness) HistoryMy maternal grandfather, Jonas Coons, came from a long line of Swiss and German ancestors. His gggg grandfather, Johann Jacob Kuhn, emigrated from Zurich to Germany, then joined the Palatine movement in 1709. Following the siren call to riches, as found in the “golden book” published by the Rev. Kochenthal, they traveled down the Rhine to Amsterdam, living in tents and other make-shift housing until the British government arranged for ships to carry them to London. There they suffered the indignities of being paupers, again living in hovels or less, while Londoners scorned and decried them for taking jobs away from the British. As Queen Anne struggled to find a place for them, first in Ireland, then in various other places in the far-flung British Empire, it was finally decided to settle them in the New World. They were to make hemp and other ship-building supplies, a task for which they had no aptitude or training. In fact, the climate in the Hudson Valley for which they were destined did not lend itself to such endeavors.

Settled they were in the fall of 1709 in two camps, East and West, across the Hudson River from each other (modern-day Germantown (Columbia County) and Saugerties (Ulster County). Governor Hunter tried valiantly to provide the basic necessities, but he soon went bankrupt when the British government (now under Cromwell) reneged on its agreement, leaving the “poor Palatines” to fend for themselves without the promised land or work. Some left the Hudson Valley for the Schoharie and Mohawk, then went south to New Jersey… but not my ancestors. They stayed, married their friends and neighbors and sometimes intermixed with the Dutch and French who had come before. I now count more than 50 immigrant ancestors among that first settlement. Many cousins still live in Dutchess, Columbia and Ulster Counties.
