Jacob Falkenburg, grandson of the first Henry Jacob Falkenburg, married a Phoebe Southard. Jane and Jim found this researched by Ralph Potter at the New Jersey Historical Society in Newark. The first American Southards were not of which we can be proud. Let us hope that their unlovable characteristics were diluted through the years by other more gentle traits given to us by other ancestors. "Thomas Southard was the first of this family in America. He was probably of a family of English dissenters who went first to Holland -- as he was born there about 1615, possibly in Leyden. He settled at Gravesend, Long Island and went to work for a farmer named Anthony Jansen. Anthony was of a somewhat higher station in life and a man of property on Long Island. His father was Jan Jansen Van Haarlem. As you know, Haarlem is a city in Holland and no doubt that district in New York got its name from that Dutch city. "Anthony and Grietje Reyniers were married on board the ship that brought them to America ca 1631. Annica, the first of their four daughters, was born around 1632 in what is now lower Manhattan in New York City. In a mutually agreeable arrangement Thomas Southard and Annica Jansen were married. Thomas was probably looking to a dower, and Anthony no doubt happy to have one of his daughters off his hands. Thomas bought land of Anthony whereby making them neighbors. Court records show Anthony to be mean and quarrelsome, and at odds with the law, with the church pastor and his wife, and finally with Thomas who was no less contentious. When it became apparent that things would be no better between the families, Thomas and Annica moved to Hempstead, Long Island. There they raised their family of 9 children. They died there, he in 1688. Annica was still living in 1698. Their second son, John, was our ancestor. "As the sons grew to manhood they found it more difficult to live in Hempstead as they felt more Dutch than English. "In the years before the Revolution, feelings ran high between the American rebels and those loyal to the crown. Their English neighbors insisted they take sides. To escape this, many Southards decided to leave Hempstead, some going up the Hudson River and others going to Connecticut. Our John had married Grace Carman who lived on a neighboring farm. I believe she was the daughter of either Joseph or Caleb Carman. Thus the name ...."3 |

Bergen records the following: "Southard or Southhart, Thomas, of Gravesend, (sup) English, m. Annica da. of Anthony Jansen from Salee. Bought Dec. 20, 1650, of Thomas Applegate the one half of the lot Applegate bought of Randell Hunt, as per Gravesend rec. Owned plantation-lot No. 11 in Gd in 1653. He quarrelled with his father-in-law Anthony Jansen about the owership of cattle, on which Anthony was imprisined by the local court of Gravesend, but released by the higher one of the colony, as per p. 136 of the Calendar of Dutch Man. He appears to have removed to Hempstead, where he resided in 1670, having sons Thomas Jun and John, whose descendants reside in that locality. He was also probably the ancestor of the Southards of N.J. Abraham, son of Thomas Jun, settled in Bernardstown,N.J. whose grandson, the Hon. Samuel L. Southard, represented N.J. as Senator in the Congress of 1821, in 1823, was Secretary of the Navy, in 1841, chosen president of the Senate and on the death of Harrison, in April of that year, acting Vice President, as per p. 47 of Vol 2 of Thompson's L.I. We urgently need more men with proven paper trails from Constant Southworth to have DNA testing with Family Tree DNA to prove or disprove this relationship. | Note | Per Toni Turk: "There is an exact 25 marker match between the submitter's SOUTHERN (SOUTHARD) line and that of Wayne Edward SOUTHWOOD. A degree of noted relationship then continues back through the 67 marker test. Wayne has uploaded a GEDCOM that goes back to Edward SOUTHWOOD b. 1727. This family is associated with Exeter, Devon, England. Proceeding from a standard genealogical guesstimation, the 1615 Thomas SOUTHARD's father would have been born circa 1589. Using the given name of Thomas in combination with a 20 year range either side of 1589, a filtered search of the IGI was done - knowing full well that the LDS extraction program is pretty complete during that time frame. This surfaced three extractions. Interestingly all three are associated with Devon. Examination of these three is easily narrowed to one most likely and that is Thomas SOTHWOOD, christened 9 Oct 1580 in St. Edmunds, Exeter, Devon, England. This is a parish register extraction. Thomas' father was William SOTHWOOD. "Thomas came to America on a Dutch ship and lived with the Dutch on what is now Long Island, NY. "He first appeared on Long Island among the Dutch of Gravesend, probably during the late 1640's." "Thomas SOUTHEWOODE married Elizabeth Hellyar 23 Jan 1574 at St. Kerrian, Exeter, Devon, England. | Note | "Founding Father of Brooklyn" In 1639 Anthony Jansen van Salee, a mulatto Moroccan-Dutch immigrant, and his wife, Grietje Reyniers, established a plantation on Gravesend Bay between the present-day communities of New Utrecht and Coney Island. Four years later, in 1643, an English noblewoman, Lady Deborah Moody (christened 1586-1658/59) and a small contingent of religious dissenters from Massachusetts obtained a patent from the Dutch Director-General of New Netherland, William Kieft, for a vast tract of land covering all or part of a number of modern Brooklyn neighborhoods including Gravesend, Coney Island, Bensonhurst, Brighton Beach, Manhattan Beach, and Midwood. Lady Moody and her followers tried to settle the land but soon were forced to withdraw due to the war Governor Kieft had provoked with the region’s Native American tribes. After the war ended in 1645, a new patent was issued. The inhabitants of Gravesend also entered into a series of agreements with Native American leaders purchasing the land for Gravesend and neighboring areas including Coney Island. The Native American “system of land tenure was that of occupancy for the needs of a group;”5sales that Europeans deemed outright transfers of property were to the Native Americans closer to leases or joint tenancy contracts where they still had rights to property.2 |

Anthony Janse Van Salee Called "The Turk" He was called in an action of the case in New Amsterdam, June 1, 1654, as MULLATO FARBIG, i.e.swarthy. Bergen, in his EARLY SETTLERS OF KINGS COUNTY, NEW YORK, states "Anthony, from Salee, Vaes or Fez (Theunis Janszen Van Salee, in Dutch) emigrated at an early date to New Amsterdam where he resided from 1633 to 1639, owning a town lot and a bouwery (farm). He died about 1676, intestate. In April, 1639 he and his wife were banished from New Amsterdam in consequence of their being slanderous and troublesome persons (disturbers of the peace). He, however, appears to have managed to remain in the town until Aug.3, 1639, when on petition he was granted by the Director General or Governor Kieft, 100 morgens on the west end of Long Island, lying within the present bounds of New Utrecht and Gravesend, to which he removed...His father, probably a Hollander, was named Jan. Local designations Van Salee and Van Vaes indicate that he lived in Morocco long enough for them as his home. His father could have been Jan Jansen Van Haarlem, a sea rover. Anthony was erroneously called "The Turk". His farm on Long Island was designated as "Turk's Plantation". Sometime before 1669, Grietse died and Anthony married Metje Grevenraet. In that year (1669) the Jansens became residents of former New Amsterdam, then under English rule and, of course, called New York. They lived in a house on Bridge Street until Anthony's death in 1676. Metje continued to live there another ten years.6 |

Domine Bogardus and Domine Schaets had many a slander suit.
