NoteAs further evidence of this relationship, one of Samuel Montross’s known sons, Jacob b. abt. 1774, is found still in the Town of Clinton on the 1810 Census with a nearby neighbor of Benjamin Southard. This Benjamin is probably the son of Benjamin and brother to our Barend who married Elizabeth Ostrander. Their daughter Catherine married Samuel Montross Worden.

Moreover, on a single page in the 1810 Census in the Town of Clinton, I find not only this Jacob Montross and Benjamin Southard but also several Barnes and a Carman. Catherine Barnes was Benjamin Southard, Sr.’s mother, and Grace Carman was his great grandmother.3 
Name-OthSamuel Montross was also found as Matross which was the spelling adopted by some members of the Montross family around the time of the Revolutionary War, "possibly in an attempt to dissociate themselves from the branch of the family whose members fought on the British side, that is, the sons of Peter (11)."4

Note*"The old homestead of Samuel and Phebe Ann Montross was located where the house of Phebe Ann Mott now [Aug. 1911] stands in Clinton Hollow. The building just north on the same side of the street and once used as a shoemaker's shop is where the home of Hannah & Ed. W. Briggs was. It contained three rooms -- a living room, one bedroom downstairs and one upstairs.

"The old house of Benjamin Briggs and his wife Deborah Wickes who came from the east is where the house of H. Van Dyne now stands." in 1796.9
